1. the tendency of two fluids of different strengths that are separated by something porous to go through it and become mixed. Osmosis is the chief means by which the body absorbs food and by which fluid in the tissues moves into the blood vessels. Osmosis is specifically the tendency of a fluid of lower concentration to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution of higher concentration.
